Banda Achilifunk in Madrid for the first time

January 16th, 2012

For the first time in Madrid, the Banda Achilifunk & Ensemble Taller de Musics will play live in Madrid with the presentation of their album Gitano Real (Lovemonk, 2011).  The show will take place on February 9 at 22:00 at Sala Galileo Galilei, as part of Girando Por Salas del Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música.

Banda Achilifunk

They’re a quartet of top-line rumberos (Sam Mosketón, Muchacho, Jack Tarradellas and Rambo), and masters of funk (Lalo López and Paco Mantecao of the Fundación Tony Manero) and jazz who have come together to play classic funk and Catalán rumba tracks. This current line-up brings a new character, seasoned with a metal section from the Original Jazz Orquestra Taller de Músics.  Its a project that, under the musical direction of Paco Mantecao, achieves a special sound that we call “big band rumba funk”.

Gitano Real is the culmination of the Achilifunk trilogy which began in 2007 with the acclaimed album/book compilation thought up by Txarly Brown, the most knowledgeable payo in all things rumba and a driving force in the rumba resurgence that is currently taking Barcelona by storm.

Banda Achilifunk – I Believe in Miracles (7-inch) LMNKV67

September 1st, 2011

Banda Achilifunk - I Believe in Miracles (7-inch) LMNKV67Regarding the album:
“This has not been off the decks since I first got it and have been hammering it to death on the show. One of the ESSENTIAL albums of 2011. Perfect in every sense and totally irresistable”
Craig Charles (BBC 6Music)

Two cover versions included on the essential album GITANO REAL.
I Believe in Miracles is an overwhelming take on the Jackson Sisters classic in a rumba funk fashion. Party stomper!! And on the other side, a longer trip departing from McFadden and Whitehead’s seminal Ain’t Non Stoping Us Now and touching the revered latin disco version of Charanga 76, only to end up as a fabulous clap-driven rumba stormer.

Two very necessary sun-soaked tunes for any self-respecting dj on neat black vinyl.
And yes, it’s a limited edition!

Various Artists – Más Achilifunk (CD/LP) LMNK29

June 23rd, 2009

Más Achilifunk (CD/LP) LMNK29In 2007 Lovemonk released an album that took the world by surprise. Achilifunk was a great discovery for those who thought Flamenco is an impervious genre. The album, chosen one of the best compilations of the year by British magazine Wire (yes, the one with all the weird records), showed why Rumba was boss in Spain’s popular music from the late sixties to the early eighties.

Spanish Rumba began when Gipsy musicians in Barcelona adopted the Cuban and Afro-American music coming from the other side of the pond. The style soon spread all over Spain and even produced a couple of international hits.

After having shown us the roots of Rumba, Txarly Brown – the non-gipsy who knows most about Rumba – helps us to discover the future.

Mas Achilifunk, the follow-up to the successful Achilifunk is a musical trip that starts in Barcelona and subsequently travels around the world. Txarly connects the dots between the best new Rumba acts coming out of Barcelona and some of the most forward thinking remixers and producers out there. The result is an electrifying and boundary-breaking slab o’wax that will have your rump shaking before you can say “culo”.

Various Artists – Achilifunk (CD&BOOK) LMNK20

June 27th, 2007

Achilifunk (CD&BOOK) LMNK20AchiliFunk is a proposal to recover the afroamerican influences that spilled spanish music rooted in rumba and flamenco.

Everything started in the early 6os. The legendary rumba singer Peret set the start of it all from Barcelona, the birth place of the new genre. Spanish rumba comes mainly from the collision of flamenco with afrocuban rumba, funk, soul and Fania Sound. The package includes the album and also a booklet with more than 100 pages explaining the Rumba history in spanish, english and japanese.

It contains all The Classics, but this journey into the vaults of Barcelona and Madrid’s dustiest record shops will discover many hidden gems to the avid crate diggers, great breakbeats for the sample chasers but first of all is a great party music album. The tracklist features classic and rare cuts, and as bonus tracks two newly recorded covers from this era, one featuring the legendary Peret himself.

AchiliFunk has been compiled by Txarly Brown, graphic designer, deejay, musician, black grooves enthusiast and crazy record collector from Barcelona. During the last decade he has developed a deep exploration of all things rumba. Txarly was also cofounder of seminal electronic label Novophonic and the experimental one Business Class. He has travelled Europe spinning records with The Nairobi Trio and playing with the sampladelic Camping Gaz.

Welcome to the world of Rumba, the real Spanish party music originated in Barcelona!
