Boohgaloo Zoo – I Got (12-inch) LMNKV60

January 17th, 2011

Boohgaloo Zoo - I Got (12") LMNKV60This is the third single taken from Boohgaloo Zoo’s devastatingly good self-titled debut album. “I Got” is a relentless disco groover while “Come To This” is a slow-mo exotica housebomb (whatever that may mean) with some hints of exotica. Two fat and funky joints.

This time, the remixes are courtesy of Mugwump and Aardvark. Mugwump takes the original and turns it into an electrifying discoid tour de force. Aardvark does his thing, which lately means taking a song, and giving it an electronic shock treatment. Those who like forward thinking electronic music will go bananas for this one. Post “nameyourfavourite”?

Background info:
Boohgaloo Zoo are K’bonus and U-Gene, two veterans of the Belgian and Dutch music scenes, respectively. After meeting at the 10 Days Off festival in Ghent, the duo started sending each other beats and tracks, and soon enough a full album was in the making. K’bonus’ beats and samples and U-Gene’s vocals and keys are a match made in heaven, resulting in tunes reminiscent of Amp Fiddler, Chromeo, Arthur Russell and Funkadelic. And all at once!

Boohgaloo Zoo – Testify (12″) LMNKV54

June 14th, 2010

Boohgaloo Zoo - Testify (12") LMNKV54“Testify” is the second single taken from Boohgaloo Zoo’s stunning self-titled debut album. U-Gene goes all out on the vocals while the bassline and synth stabs are clearly in the business of tearing roofs off suckers. Heavy 21st century funk!

The remixes make sure that those who like to shake their behinds to something more up-tempo get with the program as well – Soulphiction goes to work on the track not once but twice in a full-on boogie mix and one that is more on the minimal side, while Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard takes it to very late night club territories.

Boohgaloo Zoo – Boohgaloo Zoo (CD) LMNK34

May 31st, 2010

Boohgaloo Zoo (CD) LMNK34If a big bass line is tickling your loins, a pounding beat is shaking your hips, a whirlwind of words is making your ears ring and you can’t stop your right or left hand from waving in the air while making a horn sign, chances are you are dancing to the sounds of Boohgaloo Zoo. Two fellas from the Lowlands who created a heavy heavy monster sound: a touch of (nu-)disco and house, stomping hip-hop beats, smooth vocals and blistering rhymes and a whooooole lotta funk spelled with a rather large “P”. Think Arthur Russell, think Chromeo, think Amp Fiddler, think, yes, George Clinton.

K’bonus and U-Gene collaborate with a host of musicians like Cleveland rapper and Gilles Peterson & co.’s favourite Replife, who shows his skills on “Found It”, “Watch It”, (single) “No Joke” and “Tonight”, the García brothers Martín and Josué aka two thirds of Spanish funk ensemble Speak Low’s brass section (“No Joke”, “Dead Wood”) and Belgian turntablist Grazzhoppa (“No Joke”), who will also be part of the outfit when the Boohgaloo Zoo is taken to the stage.

After meeting at the 10 Days Off festival in Ghent the duo started sending each other beats and tracks and soon enough a full album was in the making. K’bonus’ beats and samples and U-Gene’s vocals and keys are a match made in P-funk heaven, as you can hear on this, their debut album following the 12” of “No Joke” (which featured remixes of Juju & Jordash and Seiji).

K’bonus
K’bonus, or Bruno Truyens as his mama calls him, comes from Antwerp, where he has been strutting his stuff on the many stages scattered all over the diamond city for ages. As a drummer in the band Dedos, with which he released a couple of 12”s on the Eighttrack label, as a DJ playing each and every funk-boogie-breaks-soul-techno-hip-hop-house party ever held in Belgium and some more in Europe and the USA, and as a producer having released an album and several singles on Wha?Roots, Pulver, Eighttrack and his own N.I.C.E. imprint. This man’s got funk flowing through his veins.

U-Gene
If a band’s from The Netherlands and plays music that’s remotely funky, don’t be surprised to find U-Gene among their ranks. The man has played with everyone from Kraak & Smaak, Liquid Spirits, Seven Eleven, Eboman and Urban Dance Squad to Rednose Distrikt, Kid Sublime and Aardvarck, either as a band member or as a guest vocalist/keyboard player. By the end of the nineties he enjoyed quite a status in his home country as one half of U-Gene & O-Jay.
