Various Artists – Marula Soul 4

Marula Soul 4 (CD) LMNK27Marula is a small club in Madrid. Very small, but with a great rep that goes beyond the city’s nightlife. It’s not uncommon that people from outside Madrid or even Spain to come to the club and shout out “But it’s much smaller than I expected!” And it’s true, it seems unbelievable that bands like Speak Low, The Right Ons or Sweet Vandals and DJs like Quantic, Jazzanova or Nickodemus, to name but a few, have played in a place this small.

This summer, Marula opens a new club, this time in the lovely city of Barcelona, with the same spirit and philosophy as the one in Madrid (i.e. really good music and the friendliest personnel on this side of the Rio Grande) but a lot bigger. Of course, we’re pretty jealous here in Madrid.

As far as we are concerned, there is no better way to celebrate this new club than with this record. A new compilation with all the characteristics that make Lovemonk and Marula what they are: a mix of styles, times and tempos, but always with a whole lot of funk and soul.

The CD opens with an undisputable classic: “Yes We Can Can” by The Pointer Sisters, and if you don’t mind us saying so, a record that kicks off like this can only be a good, or very good record. From there on, “Marula Soul 4” goes all over the place: funk, Afro beat, cosmic disco, boogie, hip-hop breaks, house and of course soul. Artists such as Groove Armada remixed by the mythical Greg Wilson, Escort, the latest sensation coming from the New York underground, Jamie Lidell, Soul Vigilantes, Japanese hipsters Cro Magnon and super Swedes Sumo (accompanied by Ugandan singer Sammy Kasule) are but a few of the names making up this tour of groovy. Wanna come along?

2. Secret Stealth – Stealth 2
3. Luna & Bazis – Fatal Attraction
4. Casbah 73 – Freshly Squeezed
5. Elektrons – Don’t Give Up

7. The Souljazz Orchestra – Insurrection
